Table of Metal Surfaces

Zahner offers a range of metal surfaces, including surfaces which have been mechanically produced, patinated, as well as custom surface altering products such as our MetaSystems™ Series and our Zira™ Process.  The table below shows some of the metals we've produced, as well as products that we recommend for various applications.

*Note:  Many of these surfaces are not immediately available to be distributed as samples.

Metal Symbol Density (lbs/ft³) Specific Gravity* Melting Point
Aluminum Al 165 2.70 1220 °F
Brass Cu+Zn 534 8.56 1652 °F

Brass is any alloy of copper and zinc. Although it is typically used for for bright golden hues, Zahner® labs achieve a range of tones through advanced processes and patinas. Brass has a muted yellow color, somewhat similar to gold. It is relatively resistant to tarnishing, and is often used as decoration and for coins. In antiquity, polished brass was often used as a mirror.

Bronze Cu+Sn 509 8.16 1562 °F

Bronze is a copper alloy, most often using tin as an additive. Bronze can also be combined with phosphorus, aluminum, and manganese to achieve various structural specifications or different looks.

Copper Cu 556 8.91 1981 °F

Copper is a ductile metal with very high thermal and electrical conductivity. Pure copper is soft and malleable, and a freshly exposed surface has a pinkish or peachy color. Copper is unique from many of the other metals that we offer, because it wants to evolve, changing tones and colors as it oxidizes. It has a certain degree of unpredictability, which is part of why it's Bill Zahner's metal of choice.

Lead Pb 711 11.39 621 °F
Magnesium Mg 109 1.75 1240 °F
Muntz Cu+Zn+Fe 523 8.39 1650 °F

Alpha beta Brass, 3/5 copper and 2/5 zinc, along with traces of iron. It is named after George Fredrick Muntz, a metal-roller of Birmingham, England. Muntz commercialised the alloy following his patent of 1832, although one William Collins had patented a 56:44 alloy in 1800.

Nickel Silver Cu+Ni+Zn 527 8.45 1725 °F
Stainless Steel Fe+Ni+Cr 492 7.91 2550 °F

Stainless steel's makeup varies widely, but anything with more than 11% Chromium and 50% Iron is stainless steel. Nickel, Carbon, Manganese are in most blends of stainless.
