Bowdoin College

Bowdoin College Museum of Art

Located in Brunswick, Maine, the Bowdoin College of Art went through a redesign and renovation to the building envelope by the architects Machado & Silvetti . Completed in 2007, the project features a bronze and blackened steel pavilion on the south side of the Walker Art Building at Bowdoin College. This addition provides a new entry for the 19th Century museum, as well as a general expansion of the museum.

The Bowdoin Art Center is the second project Zahner completed with Machado and Silvetti, the first being a public art project in Ohio for the University of Cincinnati, The Walker Tower for Sigma Sigma Fraternity.

The photo above emphasizes the way that the design is constructed, such that the north curtainwall has little structural support, creating the illusion that the structure floats. This entry is a glass box from which visitors then descend into the below-ground museum, similar in function to the renowned Louvre addition in Paris, France.
