50 Hudson Yards Terrace

October 31, 2023/in Exterior Architecture Corporate New York City Kevin Daly Architects, Kohn Pedersen Fox Silver S 2022 /by Winifred Wright

Located on the 51st floor of 50 Hudson Yards, this canopy was designed by Kevin Daly Architects and built for Meta New York.

Because of unique geometry requirements Zahner was brought on to solve the dilemma of how to weld and curve 11-gauge mirror stainless steel without affecting the delicate finish.

The canopy utilizes over 400 of Zahner’s Drop & Lock™ panels as well as custom perforations with Louvered ZIRA™ patterned tabs. Each panel is uniquely welded, formed, and bent to create a sense of movement across the mirror surface in addition to reflecting back the landscaping below.

To avoid reflectivity issues on the top side of the canopy Zahner’s proprietary Angel Hair® Stainless Steel finish was used as a light-diffusing option.

The bottom side of the canopy features perforated mirror polish stainless steel.

Starbucks Reserve® Roastery

July 24, 2020/in Interior Architecture Retail & Commerce New York City New York Starbucks Design Office S 2018, 2019 /by Winifred Wright

Located in New York City, the Starbucks Reserve® Roastery showcases key elements of the bean-to-cup journey. The design intent focused on the customer experience and education of the art and science that goes into cultivating, roasting, and serving coffee.

Starbucks brought in Zahner to help them explore how to use natural metal finishes to heighten the customer experience as they developed the new flagship store. The exploration involved using actual coffee beans to apply the chemicals to the activated surface of the copper sheets, with the desired aesthetic being similar to that of our Dirty Penny™ patina. Zahner supplied 1,200 square feet of custom-formed and patinated copper panels for the project. The copper forms are both sculptural as well as functional.

Barnard College; New York, NY

Prominent in its upper westside location in Manhattan, The Cheryl and Philip Milstein Teaching and Learning Center is a new academic hub in the heart of the Barnard College campus. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), the 128,000 square foot building features a five-floor base plinth which transitions into a slim eleven floor tower that is aligned with the existing STEM facility of Altschul Hall.

Zahner supplied custom Baroque™ patinated zinc sheets, one of our custom-developed patinas available in the Zahner Surfaces collection. As Barnard looks to the future, the Baroque surfaces will age elegantly as the College continues in its role as a premier institution for women of intellect, ambition, and vision.

178 North Eleventh is mixed-use residential renovation designed by Kutnicki Bernstein Architects. The building features an antique patina on copper sheets provided by Zahner.

The seven-story building is a former button factory and manufacturing warehouse, developed by Great Point Properties to serve the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. The building’s facade is divided between two distinct blocks of various sized blue-green copper panels produced on Star Blue copper, a standard antiqued copper patina developed by Zahner.

Walker Tower

January 4, 2017/in Interior Architecture Historic, Residential New York City CetraRuddy, Ralph Thomas Walker Gold L 2014 /by cmorris

Walker Tower at 210 West 18th Street

Walker Tower is a residential high-rise in New York City constructed by architect Ralph Thomas Walker in 1929. For its historic renovation in 2011, Zahner provided custom manufactured architectural details, which can be seen throughout its interior and exterior spaces.

Working under CetraRuddy architects and the JDS real estate team, engineers and fabricators at Zahner assisted the project team’s unique design challenges. The original building served as offices for New York Telephone Company, so the design team’s challenge was to transform this building into luxury residences for the 21st century and beyond.

“

We greatly admire Walker’s original Art Deco entrance of nickel and brass sunbursts and electrical motifs. We extended this aesthetic into the lobby through a rich experience of materials. Even Fred Astaire would not seem out of step in such a space.

John CetraFounding Principal.atcategory

As a historic building, it was important to maintain and reintroduce bronze and nickel silver features throughout the building. Zahner provided brass medallions, bronze leaf in glass, and nickel silver. These features included sliding glass door system for the interior lobby, elevator and door transoms, custom door and sidelites, and chevron mullion inserts for both the lobby, vestibule and exterior.

Guggenheim Canopy

December 30, 2016/in Art & Sculpture, Exterior Architecture Museum, Public Art New York City Frank Gehry Partners Rose, Yellow M 2001 /by cmorris

Guggenheim Canopy at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim Canopy, designed by Frank Gehry Partners, is a Zahner-manufactured installation which was on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City beginning in 2001. The artwork was erected for a Frank Gehry retrospective at the Museum in May-August, 2001. In addition to providing the canopy, Zahner also manufactured a number of mirror-polish stainless steel tables for the rooftop cafe.

The canopy artwork was manufactured using a titanium skin and aluminum structure. The form was made using ZEPPS, the Zahner-patented technology for building sculptural forms. This system was used to build the aluminum structure. The titanium was then clad over the aluminum substrate using a custom flat seam system.

The titanium’s luminescent coloring was made possible by a thick layer of oxide on the metal surface. There are two distinct overlapping forms, and each is colored using a unique color of titanium-cladding made by varying the oxide thicknesses. This oxide process is called interference-coating, and can be used to create a range of iridescent colors on stainless steels and titanium surfaces.

Hendrix Private Residences

December 30, 2016/in Art & Sculpture Private Art, Residential New York City Hendrix + Studio Jan Hendrix White M, S 2010 /by cmorris

Jan Hendrix Residential Art Installations

In 2010, Zahner worked with artist Jan Hendrix to craft a series of white painted aluminum screens for private residences. These aluminum screens typify Hendrix’s artistry, which can now be seen around the world. This work provides an early example of the collaborative work done with the two firms.

Multiple plates with custom tracery are cut into the aluminum. Jan Hendrix’s studio provided drawings to the Zahner team, and the aluminum artworks were then water-jet cut and fabricated with simple mounting systems. The artworks were then shipped and installed by local teams in Manhattan. These artworks represent a few of the many Hendrix Studio collaborations with Zahner. These include: Art Wall at Doha, the Hendrix Mexico Sculpture, and Patio de las Jacarandas, and many more.

400 Fifth Avenue

August 15, 2016/in Exterior Architecture Residential New York City Gwathmey Siegel Silver L 2010 /by cmorris

400 Fifth avenue: Langham Place, New York City

A stainless steel crown, engineered and fabricated by Zahner, sits atop the 650’ high-rise. Angel Hair, the Zahner developed glare reducing surface texture, was applied to each panel along with custom bumps. Langham Place, originally the Setai Hotel, was designed by Gwathmey Siegel in tandem with Schuman, Lichtenstein, Claman & Efron.

The project used a Design Assist process to explore the client’s design and find ways to reduce costs in the field. This process led to a reduction in field time by creating the parts using ZEPPS, the Zahner method of fabricating and installing complex forms. Assemblies are engineered in pre-fabricated sections, resulting in more efficient field installation and lowered cost for the client.

ZEPPS was used to translate the architect’s design into shippable parts. Zahner engineers methodically planned each shipment to ensure optimization. Like pieces in a puzzle, Zahner engineers fit each crate to maximize the allowed space in each semi-truck load. Similarly, installation was methodically pre-planned using the digital model. The massive panel assemblies were lifted into place and secured to the primary structure using a small number of cold-connections.
