1700 Pennsylvania Avenue – The Mills Building

The historic Mills Building at 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue has undergone a complete transformation after a meticulous redesign and remodel completed in 2022. Renowned for its proximity to national landmarks, this iconic 11-story structure built in 1966 captivates with its attention to detail, expansive floor plates, and landscaped rooftop terrace offering unrivaled views of Washington, D.C. Zahner worked with the late Bob Schofield, former senior vice president at master developer Akridge, who wanted a metal-paneled lobby that evoked movement and artistry. Schofield specified a unique finish of pure zinc for the interiors of the Mills Building, using ZEPPS (Zahner Engineered Profile Panel System) to create the curvilinear shape of the walls. This allowed the panels to be manufactured to very accurate dimensions in Kansas City while the building renovation was underway. Each ZEPPS module was floor to ceiling and 8 feet in width, allowing for the rapid installation of the pure zinc surface that was darkened to create a mottled finish on the small layered shingles.

McMurtry Building

A work of architecture which both matches the surrounding aesthetics and yet stands out as an icon of its own, the McMurtry Building is a unique architectural project in Stanford, California. The structure features Zahner craftsmanship in both its custom patinated zinc facade and the courtyard's grand stairway. The McMurtry Building was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro whose design team worked with executive designers Boora Architects to bring this 100,000-square-foot project to fruition. The building was named for donors Burt & Deedee McMurtry who contributed over a third of the building's costs. The campus building brings studio art, design, art history, film, and media studies together under a zinc roof.

Washington Elementary

Washington Elementary School in Sacramento features a number of unique metal elements manufactured by Zahner using ImageWall for custom perforated metal. Working for Landmark Construction with the designers at HMC Architects, Zahner provided the screens with custom perforated imagery on stainless steel and pre-weathered steel. These screen elements were used to provide passive security and signage while expressing the school's creativity, science, and technology — marking a new shift towards practicing the STEAM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics). To establish this new shift in education, Sacramento City Unified School District partnered with city leaders and Principal Dr. Gema Godina-Martinez to envision the transformative shift and redesign of Washington Elementary School. The school pursued a STEAM academic program, becoming a magnet for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math education.
