Angel Gate

June 10, 2017/in Art & Sculpture, Interior Architecture Private Art, Worship Center Kansas City L. William Zahner Brown, Gold S 2003 /by cmorris

Angel Gate at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Angel Gate is a bronze and aluminum art feature which was manufactured at the Zahner facility in Kansas City. Commissioned by The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the bespoke metal artwork provides a functional gate entry into an inner worship space.

The artwork is made up of stacked plates of aluminum and bronze. To increase the contrast between the two metal components, Zahner created a stepped layout between each metal plate. This provided a bolder feel for the light gateway. The use of bronze accentuates the gold-gilded capitals of the two Corinthian columns in the doorway, visually integrating the gate with the church’s original late 19th century design and context.

Zahner worked with Dierk Van Keppel whose studio at Rock Cottage Glass created the glass inlay for the artwork. The metal component of the piece was made in aluminum at the Zahner facility in Kansas City. The aluminum surface is processed with a GB-60 finish, providing a muted reflectivity.

ne1401 Lawrence in Denver, Colorado

1401 Lawrence is a Beck Group-designed building which features a Zahner-manufactured entry screen facade as well as an interior perforated art wall made using ImageWall by Zahner. The screenwall serves as a natural ventilation surface for the residential tower’s above ground parking.

The new highrise is located in the heart of downtown Denver. The design integrates the historic fabric of Denver’s LoDo district with a refined and contemporary facade. The project is pursuing LEED Gold certification. The building’s exterior entrances are framed by a custom perforated metal manufactured by Zahner. Beck Group has worked with Zahner on a number of projects which require curvilinear forms and perforated metal, including the Harim Headquarters in Seoul and the Irving Convention Center in Dallas.

Livermore Outlets

ImageWall system, for San Francisco Premium Outlets®

In 2015, Zahner provided the San Francisco Premium Outlets with a perforated metal artwall, installed in an outdoor area of the public mall development. Gates + Associates provided the landscape design for the entire development’s expansion, adding 185,000 SF to the project. This addition makes the project the largest outlet mall in the state of California.

Gates + Associates worked with Zahner’s ImageWall team to develop the artwall, which was shipped and installed by the architect’s contractor. The design is rolling landscape which depicts the surrounding area’s vineyards. Manufactured in Dirty Penny copper, the patina will continue to weather and grow in its depth over time. Since the copper patina is exposed to the outdoors, the oxidization will eventually turn dark brown, and then after a few decades, will become green.

The San Francisco Premium Outlets is Located in Livermore, California, the campus is part of the greater San Francisco region, and is located amongst some of California’s oldest vineyards. The development is state’s largest outdoor outlet shopping mall, and includes high end brand stores atypical of outlet malls, including Prada, Gucci, and Coach. The addition brought a number of new arrivals, including Versace, Jimmy Choo, Tory Burch, Rag & Bone, and Dsquared.

Walker Tower

January 4, 2017/in Interior Architecture Historic, Residential New York City CetraRuddy, Ralph Thomas Walker Gold L 2014 /by cmorris

Walker Tower at 210 West 18th Street

Walker Tower is a residential high-rise in New York City constructed by architect Ralph Thomas Walker in 1929. For its historic renovation in 2011, Zahner provided custom manufactured architectural details, which can be seen throughout its interior and exterior spaces.

Working under CetraRuddy architects and the JDS real estate team, engineers and fabricators at Zahner assisted the project team’s unique design challenges. The original building served as offices for New York Telephone Company, so the design team’s challenge was to transform this building into luxury residences for the 21st century and beyond.

“

We greatly admire Walker’s original Art Deco entrance of nickel and brass sunbursts and electrical motifs. We extended this aesthetic into the lobby through a rich experience of materials. Even Fred Astaire would not seem out of step in such a space.

John CetraFounding Principal.atcategory

As a historic building, it was important to maintain and reintroduce bronze and nickel silver features throughout the building. Zahner provided brass medallions, bronze leaf in glass, and nickel silver. These features included sliding glass door system for the interior lobby, elevator and door transoms, custom door and sidelites, and chevron mullion inserts for both the lobby, vestibule and exterior.

iu Miu Aoyama in Tokyo, Japan

Miu Miu Aoyama is a luxury retail building in Tokyo designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The building exterior features Zahner-manufactured copper bullnose details with dense custom perforations and round zig-zag seams. Zahner also provided the interior copper panels with the same bumped copper aesthetic.

The project was developed for Miuccia Prada who leads the Paris-based Miu Miu brand. Located in the Aoyama district in Tokyo, the project is the latest in a neighborhood that has become known for architectural innovation. Across the street is the Prada Tokyo Epicenter also designed by Herzog & de Meuron.  The Miu Miu Aoyama represents a stark contrast to the prior work. Its subtle reflective exterior disguises its rich copper soffit and interior.

Herzog & de Meuron developed the idea of a variably perforated screen exterior which would mirror the green foliage and forestry of the surrounding Golden Gate Park, San Francisco's central park. The architects worked with Zahner whose engineers and software specialists developed a system which would allow unique perforation and patterned dimples, variably sized and placed throughout the exterior. This included near 8000 unique facade panels — the collective whole which formed patterns of light as seen through trees. This was the first iteration of the Zahner Interpretive Relational Algorithmic Process, or the ZIRA Process.

911 Memorial Overland Park

December 30, 2016/in Exterior Architecture Memorial Overland Park--Kansas SFS Architecture Brown, Gold M 2015 /by cmorris

Remember, Educate, and Honor

The 911 Memorial at Overland Park, installed at the entrance to the city’s Fire Training Center, reminds first responders of the ultimate sacrifice their service may demand. The memorial was designed by SFS Architecture and includes artifacts and custom-fabricated bronze and steel artworks provided by Zahner.

A 14-foot, 2.5 ton steel beam from ground zero stands at the memorial’s center. Four bronze panels to beam’s West tell the story of the four downed flights, and a bronze memorial listing the names of those who perished on September 11th sits to the East. A weeping wall fountain, representing survivors, stands to the North while granite tiles pulled from the World Trade Center after the attacks pave the South entrance.

The memorial’s three-fold mission is to remember the victims, educate visitors, and honor the heroism by those who served on September 11th, 2001.

The Memorial’s History

In 2009, Overland Park firefighter Trevor Miller and Captain Paul Bishoff submitted an application to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey for a piece of steel from the fallen World Trade Center towers. After learning of the application’s acceptance, more than a dozen companies and individuals volunteered time and resources to build the 9/11 Memorial.

St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center

St. Lawrence Catholic Campus is a church and campus serving students and the greater community of Lawrence, Kansas. Zahner provided the brass inlay for the stained glass, as well as the brass baptismal altar. Working with SFS Architecture and Kathy Barnard glass studio, the team developed a timeless worship and fellowship facility for a college town Catholic community campus.

The design team worked with Kathy Barnard to create a stained glass feature. Zahner was brought into the project to create the custom brass bar elements which curve throughout the stained glass windows. Zahner also fabricated the Baptismal Altar which was designed by Mike Shaughnessy of SFS Architecture.

St. Lawrence Catholic Center worked with SFS Architecture and the University of Kansas to establish design criteria and goals. This included the need to perceptually minimize the building’s scale to integrate with its surroundings. The building’s exterior appearance looks like a typical post-war low-rise residence, blending naturally into the neighborhood.
