911 Memorial Overland Park

Remember, Educate, and Honor

The 911 Memorial at Overland Park, installed at the entrance to the city’s Fire Training Center, reminds first responders of the ultimate sacrifice their service may demand. The memorial was designed by SFS Architecture and includes artifacts and custom-fabricated bronze and steel artworks provided by Zahner.

A 14-foot, 2.5 ton steel beam from ground zero stands at the memorial’s center. Four bronze panels to beam’s West tell the story of the four downed flights, and a bronze memorial listing the names of those who perished on September 11th sits to the East. A weeping wall fountain, representing survivors, stands to the North while granite tiles pulled from the World Trade Center after the attacks pave the South entrance.

The memorial’s three-fold mission is to remember the victims, educate visitors, and honor the heroism by those who served on September 11th, 2001.

The Memorial’s History

In 2009, Overland Park firefighter Trevor Miller and Captain Paul Bishoff submitted an application to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey for a piece of steel from the fallen World Trade Center towers. After learning of the application’s acceptance, more than a dozen companies and individuals volunteered time and resources to build the 9/11 Memorial.

A Great Place to Land in Downtown Overland Park

A Great Place to Land is an artwork by Gary Kahle located in Overland Park which was made using Zahner art fabrication services. Completed in 2006, the sculpture projects into the sky at the intersection of Conser and Santa Fe Drive. The permanent outdoor public artwork depicts two birds flying upwards in unison, and the work was provided by the Arts and Recreation Foundation of Overland Park in Overland Park, Kansas.

Zahner worked closely with Kahle to manufacture A Great Place to Land. Kahle came to the company’s headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri with a small maquette and worked directly with Zahner engineers and craftsmen to translate the maquette’s form into a 17-foot polished stainless steel form. The accomplished sculptor has worked with Zahner on a number of sculptural projects over the years.

Nerman Museum

Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art

For the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Zahner worked with Kyu Sung Woo Architects to create interior architectural metalwork and design elements, as well as a unique permanent art installation by Leo Villareal entitled Microcosm.

The scope of work included a perforated metal ceiling and interior facade for the building’s atrium; stainless steel interior panels for the building’s entrances; custom stainless steel service desk; and the stainless steel and LED kinetic art display for the building’s Southeast entrance.

Zahner worked with both the artist and the architect to bring these various metal details to life.

Microcosm at the Nerman Museum

In 2006, while the new building was in design development, Johnson County Community College commissioned a major, site-specific installation by Leo Villareal for the cantilever of the museum’s entrance. “The resulting piece, Microcosm, is now one of the museum’s most iconic works,” stated Bruce Hartman, executive director of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. “Leo Villareal’s survey exhibition will be a dazzling and extraordinary experience for our entire community.”

Zahner worked with the artist to develop the exterior soffit and lighting. Under the guidance of Villareal, Zahner engineering technicians installed the LED light system as part of the stainless steel ceiling. The artwork is installed at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas.
