Contemporary Jewish Museum

The Contemporary Jewish Museum was founded in 1984 in San Francisco, California, with the goal of offering contemporary perspectives on Jewish culture, history, art, and ideas. In June 2008, the Museum moved to the Yerba Buena Gardens district of San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, into a new building designed by architect Daniel Libeskind . The shape of this thought provoking structure is inspired and modeled off of the Hebrew script for L'Chaim (To Life).

The surface of the building is clad in a unique metal, cross-fire color-interference blue stainless steel. The surface is especially resistant to weathering and completely deters moisture. Zahner was responsible for the design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of this surface and the associated building envelope. This envelope uses our flagship Inverted Seam™ Roofing and Siding system, a product we designed to maximize water control on a super-planar surface. There are a total of 3,028 stainless steel panels installed using this system on the surface of this museum.

The skylight windows are engineered to perfectly integrate with our system, inset with four-sided structural silicone glazing. The 36 custom skylights sit perfectly flush with the surface of the metal, giving the roof and siding a smooth, uniform facing.

The subtle raised edges on the surface of the metal are a custom touch designed by Libeskind, what we call a "bumped" surface as part of our MetaSystems™ line of custom-surfaces.
