Equal Justice Initiative Building

July 21, 2020/in Exterior Architecture Civic, Historic Montgomery--Alabama WBA Architects Silver M 2019 /by Winifred Wright

Located in Montgomery, Alabama, The Equal Justice Initiative is a non-profit organization that provides legal representation to prisoners who may have been wrongly convicted of crimes, impoverished prisoners without effective representation, and others who may have been denied a fair trial. The Legacy Pavilion, designed by Williams Blackstock Architects, is the EJI Museum campus’ new building, and includes a welcome center, ticket office, gift shop, cafe, a new Southern cuisine restaurant from two award-winning local chefs.

Zahner engineered and fabricated the custom Angel Hair® stainless steel ImageWall® that clads the exterior of the building, which depicts the iconic images of several local civil rights activists that inspire hope for equal justice. These include Martin Luther King Jr., Claudette Colvin, John Lewis, Rosa Parks, Jonathan Daniels, Jo Ann Robinson, and E.D. Zahner’s ImageWall® team custom engineered the facade to fit the specifications of the building’s exterior, and included Cross-Seam Perf™ in the design so the imagery was continuous as it transitioned between the panels.

Walker Tower

January 4, 2017/in Interior Architecture Historic, Residential New York City CetraRuddy, Ralph Thomas Walker Gold L 2014 /by cmorris

Walker Tower at 210 West 18th Street

Walker Tower is a residential high-rise in New York City constructed by architect Ralph Thomas Walker in 1929. For its historic renovation in 2011, Zahner provided custom manufactured architectural details, which can be seen throughout its interior and exterior spaces.

Working under CetraRuddy architects and the JDS real estate team, engineers and fabricators at Zahner assisted the project team’s unique design challenges. The original building served as offices for New York Telephone Company, so the design team’s challenge was to transform this building into luxury residences for the 21st century and beyond.

“

We greatly admire Walker’s original Art Deco entrance of nickel and brass sunbursts and electrical motifs. We extended this aesthetic into the lobby through a rich experience of materials. Even Fred Astaire would not seem out of step in such a space.

John CetraFounding Principal.atcategory

As a historic building, it was important to maintain and reintroduce bronze and nickel silver features throughout the building. Zahner provided brass medallions, bronze leaf in glass, and nickel silver. These features included sliding glass door system for the interior lobby, elevator and door transoms, custom door and sidelites, and chevron mullion inserts for both the lobby, vestibule and exterior.

Corinthian Hall

December 30, 2016/in Exterior Architecture Historic, Renovation, Restoration Kansas City International Architects Atelier Green M 2006 /by cmorris

Corinthian Hall Canopy at Kansas City Museum

Originally constructed as a residence by lumber magnate R.A. Long in 1910, Corinthian Hall was donated to the Kansas City Museum Association in 1939 by Long’s two daughters. In 1948, the building was deeded to the City of Kansas City after museum funds were determined to be insufficient in maintaining the estate.

In 1996 International Architects Atelier was commissioned to conduct a restoration study and provide a preliminary cost estimate for restoration of the various estate buildings, including the main house, carriage house and stables, caretaker’s house, carpenter’s workshop, conservatory, pergola and limestone and wrought iron fence surrounding the three-acre estate.

Zahner was brought in to work on restoration of the Corinthian Hall canopy through MTS Contracting. The canopy restoration was part of a larger master plan for the historic restoration and adaptive renovation of Corinthian Hall into a mixed-use facility, incorporating elements of a traditional historic house-museum with modern elements.

Corinthian Hall’s beautifully elaborate cast bronze porté cochére canopy over the west porch was removed from its original mountings and transported to Zahner where the historic pieces were cleaned and restored with respect to its original design. Work included the re-creation of the deteriorated, original structural support system from stainless steel, re-casting and re-patination of several missing elements, and re-wiring of the original electrical service.

Using historic photographs for reference, fragments of the original glass were used to recreate the canopy glazing from a UV-stable, non-yellowing resin material, which replicates the appearance of the original glass while providing superior strength against breakage.

Midland Theatre

December 15, 2016/in Art & Sculpture, Exterior Architecture Historic, Performance Center, Renovation, Restoration Kansas City BNIM Tom Corbin Gold, Orange S 1987 /by cmorris

Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland

Midland Theatre is a historic 3,573-seat theater located in the Power & Light District of Kansas City, Missouri. The building was originally designed by Boller Bros, and has at various states been restored and renovated.

In 1987, Zahner was brought in by BNIM and and artist Tom Corbin to develop the custom architectural metal for the historic theater’s restoration.
Working from historic photographs, Zahner worked to carefully detail new fabricated components for the building’s metal marquee. Zahner artisans fabricated these parts in sheet brass and muntz, working to integrate the molded brass features cast by Tom Corbin in his foundry.
The end result is a golden marquee which resonates with the building’s original 1927 appearance.

August 15, 2016/in Exterior Architecture Historic, Residential Chicago--Illinois Lucien Lagrange Blue-grey, Grey M 2002 /by cmorris

65 East Goethe Street in Chicago, Illinois

65 E. Goethe Street was designed by Lucien Lagrange and features custom roof, facade, and window coverings by Zahner. Completed in 2002, the project required traditional building methods to match the architectural aesthetic.

The design reflects the architectural style of the Second French Empire, fitting for a building set in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast. Both roof and wall paneling systems were fabricated and installed using traditional standing seam roof practices.

The exterior cladding of the new luxury residences in Chicago by architects at Lucien Lagrange was produced by Zahner. The standing seam room wall panel design was clad with preweathered zinc, and features a wide range of historic architectural features.

Dome on the Plaza

August 15, 2016/in Exterior Architecture Historic Kansas City Gastinger Walker Harden Brown, Orange, Red, Yellow M 2008 /by cmorris

The Dome on the Country Club Plaza

Working with Gastinger Walker Harden Architects and Highwood Properties, Zahner produced the subtly spiraling domed roof for Baja 600 Restaurant on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. Zahner designed, engineered, fabricated, and installed the Dome using zinc with custom patina.

The Dome on The Plaza uses Roano Zinc, a preweathered zinc with custom patina. The Roano Zinc surface is an aged patina whose variegated tones vary from panel to panel, creating an aged aesthetic suitable for both contemporary and historic architecture.

Domed roofs are complex feats of engineering, and this one is no different. Constructing the dome’s cladding required sophisticated planning and layout. Each row of panels is characterized by a unique panel shape, requiring over twenty panel types. Zahner engineers mapped the thirty foot diameter dome so that the complex surface would be easily installed.

Starlight Theatre and Stagehouse in Kansas City

Zahner has been involved in a range of scopes for the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, ranging from the roof and cupola turrets, as well as the Donor’s Circle completed with artist Dierk Van Keppel.

Starlight Theatre has a rich history, which dates back to 1925, when a Romanian Queen visited Kansas City.  The city’s Federation of Music worked to bring a musical showcase which raised nearly ten thousand dollars, which began the movement for an outdoor theatre space. In 1951, construction was completed.

Building the Stagehouse for Starlight Theatre

In the late 1990s, they theatre company recognized a need to fortify For the Theatre’s centennial, a new building was completed to improve that quality of productions which could be performed at Starlight. In 2000, Zahner was responsible for manufacturing the new roof system for the amphitheater. Named the Jeannette and Jerome Cohen Community Stage, the new stage also included a roof for Starlight theatre, and increased its technical capability, making it one of the largest roadhouses in the country.

In addition to producing their own shows, Starlight began presenting major national tours in 2000 so they could bring more recent and contemporary Broadway musicals to Kansas City as well as share their productions with indoor theaters around the country. This increased production versatility has continued to make Starlight Theatre a summer favorite for residents and visitors alike.

Zahner manufactured the roof, cupolas, and turret towers in raw unpatinated copper, also known as “red copper”. This material quickly went from the golden-orange tones above into a warm darker tone. This material will continue to patina, and one day develop into a green verdigris patina on the building’s roof.
