1700 Pennsylvania Avenue – The Mills Building

March 26, 2024/in Interior Architecture Corporate Washington D.C. Gensler Brown, Champagne, Grey S 2023 /by Katie Barone

The historic Mills Building at 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue has undergone a complete transformation after a meticulous redesign and remodel completed in 2022. Renowned for its proximity to national landmarks, this iconic 11-story structure built in 1966 captivates with its attention to detail, expansive floor plates, and landscaped rooftop terrace offering unrivaled views of Washington, D.C.

Zahner worked with the late Bob Schofield, former senior vice president at master developer Akridge, who wanted a metal-paneled lobby that evoked movement and artistry. Schofield specified a unique finish of pure zinc for the interiors of the Mills Building, using ZEPPS (Zahner Engineered Profile Panel System) to create the curvilinear shape of the walls. This allowed the panels to be manufactured to very accurate dimensions in Kansas City while the building renovation was underway. Each ZEPPS module was floor to ceiling and 8 feet in width, allowing for the rapid installation of the pure zinc surface that was darkened to create a mottled finish on the small layered shingles.

Bill Zahner and Bob Schofield became good friends over the years as he challenged Zahner on a number of projects, creating some of the most remarkable metal surfaces in Washington, D.C. We miss Bob and the impact he had on the work.

Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium

November 1, 2021/in Exterior Architecture Entertainment, Renovation, Sculpture, Zoo Omaha--Nebraska Smith Bourne & Associates Blue, Green, Grey, Orange, Silver, White M 2019 Featured /by dsegard

Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo

Originally built in 1995, renovations for the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium at the Omaha Zoo were completed in May 2020, featuring a redesigned facade, an updated outdoor cafeteria area, and new entrance features to the aquarium and aquarium conference center. As our third project in the Omaha metro area, Zahner provided various new design elements for this renovation, including the stainless steel wave facade on top of the building, the custom-cut metal coral features and column covers, the dimpled blue stainless steel cladding around the café, and the milled sea creatures that adorn the walls surrounding the space.

Zahner was brought on early in the concept development stage to provide Design Assist, which allowed us to work closely with the project team to refine the design intent, provide guidance on materials and finishes, and construct a comprehensive mockup for review before the project went into full fabrication. Due to this collaboration, there were zero change orders on the scope, and installation ran smoothly in cooperation with the contractor and the other trades’ schedules.

The freeform wave facade that sits atop the Sea Turtle Café was fabricated using Zahner’s ZEPPS™ technology, which combined the framing structure and the exterior skin into a complete curvilinear system. The individual wave units were pre-fabricated in our shop and shipped to the job site, where Zahner field technicians installed the full facade.

Decorative painted aluminum coral features adorn the edges of the café’s canopy and wrap the supporting columns. These were cut on our water jet before they were hand-rolled to the correct radius.

Custom-embossed blue stainless steel clads the walls of the Sea Turtle Café and mimics the look of rippling water. Zahner fabricated a custom die to create this seemingly random emboss pattern. This feature is further highlighted by the lighting throughout the space, creating a fully immersive experience for visitors.

Zahner also provided the various metal sea creatures that decorate the walls of the café and the entrance sign. Each sea creature was individually milled out of aluminum on our CNC equipment.

September 27, 2021/in Sculpture Walnut Creek--California HKIT Architects Norie Sato Brown, Grey, Orange, Red, Silver M 2020 Featured /by dsegard

Viamonte at Walnut Creek Senior Living Folding Fence

This artwork entitled “In the Fold” was designed by renowned artist, Norie Sato, for the new Viamonte at Walnut Creek Senior Living Center in California. Zahner was brought on early in the design phase and provided design assist, engineering, and fabrication services for this project.

The fence is over 62 feet long, and over 7 feet tall at each peak. Inspired by the art of origami, the fence is comprised of dual-sided “Frost White” anodized aluminum and dual-sided Zahner Solanum™ weathering steel panels that are alternately folded to provide depth and an intricate profile. The branches pattern in the aluminum panels was waterjet cut while the leaves pattern on the Solanum panels was created using our ImageWall® custom-perforation technology.

In total, Zahner supplied 1,360 Rheinzink custom patinated zinc panels and 135 coping panels. Fabrication and installation ran smoothly in collaboration with Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal and Gilbane, where we worked closely with the construction team to achieve the correct curvature in the zinc skins. This process was enabled by our ZIFS system, which allows for more complex geometric forms and uses a series of parametrically designed fins to create the shape of an exterior.

The custom stainless steel perforated façade is decorated with images of molecules to complement the building’s other nods to scientific references. Perkins + Will contacted us in the design development phase of the project and we met with them in their DC office to help with the detailing up front through a design assist approach. We worked with them on the imagery and perforation pattern, material selection, detailing and engineering, and were later contracted with Glass and Metals Inc. to provide installation assistance.

Angel Hair® stainless steel was selected due to its reflectivity being lower than a mirror or 2B finish, but still offers some “life” to the surface. This finish was first developed as a custom product by Zahner as a solution to the reflective nature of standard finishes on stainless steel, and is regarded as the finest, smoothest, and most uniform light-diffusion metal surface available for architectural metal

Brickell Flatiron Parking Garage

November 4, 2020/in Exterior Architecture Parking Structure Miami--Florida Revuelta Architecture International Blue, Grey, Silver L, XL 2019 /by dsegard

Brickell Flatiron is a residential high-rise that towers above the Brickell district of Miami, Florida, at 736 ft. The name “flatiron” references the triangular lot that the 64-floor condominium sits on. Zahner worked closely with the architect, Luis Revuelta, and the developer, CMC Group, through the Zahner Assist process.

Zahner’s scope of work included design assist services, engineering, fabrication, and installation of the podium’s 13-story, 100,000 square foot parking garage façade. In total, the design team went through four façade design iterations before ultimately determining that the final design both creatively complimented the curvilinear forms of the architecture above and met the established budget.

Hamptons Beach House

March 21, 2017/in Exterior Architecture, Interior Architecture Passive Security, Residential Hamptons--New York Aamodt/Plumb Grey S 2013 /by cmorris

Hamptons Beach House Residence on Long Island, New York

Hamptons Beach House is private residence designed by Aamodt / Plumb which features a protective aluminum plate screen facade fabricated by Zahner. The residence is located on a narrow barrier island on the south shore of Long Island, an hour and a half from Manhattan.

The property is exposed to Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Shinnecock Bay on the other. Extreme coastal weather conditions meant that the design had to reconcile the desire to openly experience the landscape with a real need for protection.

The solution was to create a tough exterior shell with an open, light-filled interior. Intricate shadow patterns, created by water-jet cut metal screens, move through the house as the day unfolds. More than ornament, the screens protect double height windows from hurricane force winds.

OneEleven

January 4, 2017/in Exterior Architecture LEED, Residential Chicago--Illinois Handel Architects Grey M 2014 /by cmorris

OneEleven is a Chicago luxury residential tower designed by Handel Architects. The facade includes a Zahner-manufactured architectural detail made using plate aluminum. Located at 111 West Wacker Drive, the building was converted from an uncompleted hotel which had sat vacant for several years. Handel Architects were able to salvage the shell and add an additional 25 stories to create a 60-story residential building.

Zahner created the human-scale artistic details which adorn the front facade. At the front entrance, Zahner metalwork can be seen adorning the lower levels of the building’s facade as a layering of perforated metal. Zahner worked with Handel to develop a tracery pattern depicting an abstract treescape, manufactured in painted plate aluminum.
